Application

A major U.S. GOM Deepwater Operator experienced severe fluid losses while drilling sidetrack at +24,000’. BICO Drilling Tools PBL® Bypass System was positioned in BHA for wellbore curing and maintaining well control

Objective

6 ¾” PBL Bypass System was included in sidetrack BHA to deliver high concentration LCM to wellbore if losses encountered

Results & Benefits

  • PBL was successfully activated (#1@23,947’), 80 PPB LCM was delivered to stop losses and tool deactivated. Losses controlled and drilling continued. 30+ hours activated
  • PBL was successfully activated (#2@24,103’), 80 PPB LCM and 27 PPB LCM were delivered to stop losses and tool deactivated. Losses controlled and drilling continued. 28+ hours activated
  • PBL was successfully activated (#3@21,845’), 16.6 PPG cement was delivered to stop losses and tool deactivated. BHA successfully POOH. Well sidetracked to avoid loss zone. 27+ hours activated
  • PBL Tool was cycled 3 times for delivery of LCM and Cement. Well control maintained. BHA safely POOH. Total time activated was in excess of 85 hours

PBL ®Bypass System Saves Major GOM Deepwater Operator $200K+ during Completion Operation
Challenge

During completion operations on a GOM Deepwater Well, the flow rate was limited to 350 GPM by an MWD/LWD Tool in the BHA. Once evaluation was completed, there was a need to increase flow rate for hole cleaning, fluid filtering and fluid displacement. Also due to rotational requirements in a high angle hole (65 degrees), there was a need maintain fluid flow through MWD / LWD to prevent overheating the tool during displacement operations.

Solution

BICO Drilling Tools 4 ¾” PBL Tool, adapted for patented Split Flow Operations, was incorporated in the BHA. By sizing the PBL Port Nozzles and Dart Nozzle, the PBL Tool was set up to allow the flow rate to be increased to 700 GPM with 100 GPM directed to BHA for cooling and 600 GPM directed into the annulus for hole cleaning.

Results

  • PBL Split Flow Dart was pumped down to +18,000’ in 65 degree hole at 120 GPM
  • Dart landed in PBL in 20 minutes with 400 PSI pressure decrease
  • The operator was able to pump 700 GPM with the PBL activated
  • The MWD / LWD Tool did not suffer any damages due to elevated temperatures
  • The total circulating time for hole cleaning, fluid filtering and fluid displacement was reduced by more than 12 hours
  • PBL utilized to wash BOP and wellhead components while tripping out of hole

Eliminated over 12 Hours of rig time resulting in savings of +$200,000 US

South Texas Operator Utilizes BICO 2 7/8” PBL® Tool & SpiroStar™ Motor to Reduce Extended Reach Well Plug Milling Time by 3 Days
Application

Average time to mill 18 plugs in S. Texas horizontal well was 5 days. Plugs in lateral between EOB @ 10,000’ and TD @ 16,180’.

Objective

Utilize coiled tubing BHA that includes a BICO 2-7/8” Three Port PBL® Tool (Multiple Activating Circulating Sub) and BICO 2-7/8” SS150 SpiroStar™ motor. The performance evenwall SpiroStar™ motor was used to mill plugs at 2 ½ BPM while the PBL was cycled to clean the hole at accelerated flow rates (5 – 5 ½ BPM) after 3 to 6 plugs were removed. There are 7 Total Cycles available on the 2 7/8” PBL Tool.

Results & Benefits

  • Multiple activation feature of the PBL permitted increasing total and annular flow rates for hole cleaning at desired intervals. 4 Activation cycles utilized.
  • No sticking or hole problems encountered due to reduction of cuttings in wellbore
  • Fewer and Less Lengthy Coil Short Trips were required. Thus reducing the overall Coil Footage Costs
  • Incremental savings seen by the reduction and elimination of high cost Chemical additives
  • Over 6 Hours were saved by blowing coil dry with N2 through PBL while POOH. Eliminating dedicated trip
  • Overall time for operation was reduced from 5 Days to 2 Days

6 ¾” SS100 SpiroStar drilled 8,783’ ft & 115.6 ft/hr ROP in McClain County, Oklahoma SCOOP Play
Application

BICO’s 6 ¾” SS100JR SpiroStar motor was assembled as with a jetted rotor to reduce bit speed and drill the vertical section of the well in Oklahoma’s SCOOP play in McClain County, OK. The BICO motor drilled 8,783’ in 76 D&C hours with a ROP of 115.6 ft/hr
