During completion operations on a GOM Deepwater Well, the flow rate was limited to 350 GPM by an MWD/LWD Tool in the BHA. Once evaluation was completed, there was a need to increase flow rate for hole cleaning, fluid filtering and fluid displacement. Also due to rotational requirements in a high angle hole (65 degrees), there was a need maintain fluid flow through MWD / LWD to prevent overheating the tool during displacement operations.
BICO Drilling Tools 4 ¾” PBL Tool, adapted for patented Split Flow Operations, was incorporated in the BHA. By sizing the PBL Port Nozzles and Dart Nozzle, the PBL Tool was set up to allow the flow rate to be increased to 700 GPM with 100 GPM directed to BHA for cooling and 600 GPM directed into the annulus for hole cleaning.
PBL Split Flow Dart was pumped down to +18,000’ in 65 degree hole at 120 GPM
Dart landed in PBL in 20 minutes with 400 PSI pressure decrease
The operator was able to pump 700 GPM with the PBL activated
The MWD / LWD Tool did not suffer any damages due to elevated temperatures
The total circulating time for hole cleaning, fluid filtering and fluid displacement was reduced by more than 12 hours
- PBL utilized to wash BOP and wellhead components while tripping out of hole
Eliminated over 12 Hours of rig time resulting in savings of +$200,000 US
